Monthly Budget Planner in Personal Finance

The Monthly Budget Planner is a copy-ready spreadsheet that turns your paycheck into a clear plan: income at the top, fixed bills and variable spending below, and savings paid first. A remaining-to-budget column and an overspending flag each take one simple formula to set up, in both Google Sheets and Excel.

Columns (grey = calculated for you)

  • Item
  • Type
  • Planned
  • Actual
  • Difference
  1. Open the This month tab and replace the sample rows with your own — one row per entry. Formulas fill in automatically for new rows.
  2. Plan every income and spending line before the month starts until Left to budget is $0.
  3. Fill in Actual as money moves; Difference turns red where you overspent (or earned less than planned). It reads fine on a phone.
  4. Using Google Sheets? Upload the file to Google Drive, then open it with Google Sheets (or File → Import in an open sheet). Formulas, dropdowns and highlights carry over.

The file opens locally on your device — nothing is uploaded, and you own the copy outright.

Trust FAQ

Questions people ask before copying a template

How is this different from a budgeting app?
It does the same core job — plan income against spending and savings — but it's free, fully private, and yours forever. The one thing apps add is automatic transaction import; if that's your sticking point, a sync tool can feed this same sheet.
Does it work in both Google Sheets and Excel?
Yes. It uses standard functions and no add-ons, so it opens and calculates the same in Google Sheets or Microsoft Excel, on desktop or phone.
Is the Monthly Budget Planner free?
Yes, the core planner is free to copy and keep. There is no paid tier — the free download builds a complete working budget.
