How to Convert VLOOKUP to XLOOKUP in Google Sheets or Excel
VLOOKUP still works, but it was designed for a world of rigid tables: lookup column must be leftmost, return column is a fragile column index, and looking left is impossible without workarounds. XLOOKUP fixes all three.
If you have a sheet full of legacy VLOOKUP formulas, you do not need to rewrite them by hand. Paste each one into the free VLOOKUP → XLOOKUP converter and get a modern equivalent in seconds.
Why XLOOKUP is worth the switch
- No column index. You name the return column directly instead of counting
3and hoping nobody inserts a column. - Looks in any direction. Return a value from a column to the left of the key —
VLOOKUPcannot do this withoutINDEX/MATCH. - Cleaner defaults. Built-in “not found” handling replaces nested
IFERRORwrappers in many cases.
Convert a formula in three steps
- Copy the
VLOOKUPfrom your sheet — e.g.=VLOOKUP(A2, Products!B2:E100, 3, FALSE). - Paste it into the converter and click Convert.
- Copy the
XLOOKUPresult back into your sheet and spot-check a few rows.
The converter runs entirely in your browser. Your lookup table never leaves your device.
Spot-check after you paste
- Confirm the return column in the new formula matches what the old column index pointed at.
- Test one row that should match and one that should not —
XLOOKUPshould return the same results asVLOOKUPfor exact matches. - In Excel,
XLOOKUPrequires Microsoft 365 or Excel 2021+. In Google Sheets,XLOOKUPis available in current builds.
When to keep VLOOKUP
If you share a file with someone on an old Excel build that lacks XLOOKUP, leave those cells on VLOOKUP or INDEX/MATCH until everyone can open the newer function. For your own working copies, XLOOKUP is the easier long-term choice.
These tools are operational helpers, not vendor endorsements. Function availability varies by spreadsheet app version.
