Why switch to XLOOKUP?

  • No more column counting. VLOOKUP's 3 breaks the moment you insert a column. XLOOKUP points at the return column directly.
  • Looks left. VLOOKUP can only return columns to the right of the lookup. XLOOKUP doesn't care.
  • Built-in "not found". XLOOKUP takes an if_not_found argument instead of wrapping everything in IFERROR.

Available in Excel 365 / 2021+ and Google Sheets. For older Excel, keep VLOOKUP or use INDEX/MATCH.
