How to Calculate Your Real Hourly Rate Across Side Gigs

A side gig that pays $200 feels great until you realize it took six hours door to door. Another pays $80 in ninety minutes. Without math, you keep the slow one because the headline number looked bigger.

A free hourly rate calculator spreadsheet logs earnings, hours, and effective hourly rate per gig so you see which work actually pays.

Log time honestly — include hidden hours

For each gig or platform, track:

  1. Gross earnings — what deposited or what you invoiced.
  2. Total hours — prep, travel, waiting, customer messages, not just on-task time.
  3. Effective rate — earnings divided by hours.

A $35/hour delivery block that includes 45 minutes of unpaid driving is not $35/hour.

Compare gigs side by side

Sort by effective rate. The bottom third is your cut list — unless it builds skills or leads to higher-paying work you can name. “Exposure” gigs should still show a number in the sheet; if the rate is zero, that row should hurt to read.

Run the exercise monthly

Platforms change payouts, routes shift, and seasonal demand moves rates. A quarterly refresh prevents you from clinging to a hustle that stopped paying in January.

Pair rate analysis with side hustle income tracking when you also need expense and tax visibility.

When effective rate should not be the only filter

Some low-rate gigs are marketing for your main freelance offer — note that in a purpose column so you do not drop them on math alone. But most “busy all weekend” hustles deserve an honest hourly line before they get another Saturday.
